Overview

The X829 dual 2.5" SATA HDD expansion board, offering an easy and fast way to create bigger storage solution for your Raspberry Pi 4B. Its elegant and ultra-compact design allows two 2.5" HDD/SSD to be conveniently attached to Raspberry Pi 4. The SuperSpeed USB 3.0 port delivers a blistering data transfer rate of up to 5Gbps, letting you transfer a large amount of data in seconds. The mounting holes and standoffs help protect the hard disk drives, while effectively drawing the heat away from the drive for reliable performance. The built-in LED light indicates the reading or writing status – no more guesswork again.

The X829 can be the perfect storage solution for your home media center and building Network-attached storage (NAS) for storing and streaming your own videos, music, and digital photos around the house and even across the world.

Please refer to X822 or X828 if you need dual SATA board for raspberry pi 3.

FAQ

Q1. Does the X829 stackable?

A: No, X829 is not stackable, please refer to X828, among the 2.5" SATA shield I(X820 X825 X829 X828), ONLY X828 is stackable.

Q2: Do X series NAS shields support UASP?

A: 2.5", 3.5" NAS shield(such as X825 X829 X829 X835 X832) use JMS583 IC, and all supports UASP(NOTE: Not supported UASP in earlier versions, produced before July 1, 2020), to prevent HDD/SDD from entering the hibernation state,

but M.2 MSATA SSD (X862 V1.0) only support TRIM not UASP; M.2 MSATA SSD (X862 V2.0)only support UASP not TRIM.

Hello, i have pi4b + x829 + x708.

When i plug x829:upport -> with Usb3cable -> pi4:usb2 port, hdd is visible and detected. I have such (good) picture:

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ sudo lsusb Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub Bus 001 Device 008: ID 174c:0829 ASMedia Technology Inc. Hub Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

When i plug x829:upport -> width Usb3cable -> pi4:USB3 port then hdd is not detected, and picture is bad.

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ sudo lsusb Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub Bus 001 Device 002: ID 2109:3431 VIA Labs, Inc. Hub Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Both pi4:Usb3 ports are checked, and ok.

What can i do to solve it?

Oh, self answer:

It seems that my hdd needs more time to start, when plugged to usb3 port (geekworm, why?).

So i forced to give it more time to spin up.

Two steps to do it:

1. Set USB boot first, instead of SD (but usb is not bootable). So pi4 give it some power on start:

sudo -E rpi-eeprom-config --edit and set BOOT_ORDER=0xf14

2. Give it timeout to spin:

sudo vi /boot/config.txt

program_usb_boot_timeout=5 max_usb_current=1 program_usb_boot_mode=1

This works, but now system starts for a longer time. Is there a way to get things working not in a such tricky way?

Hi, How to Avoid the USB3.0 and 2.4 GHz Devices Interference?

Lisa

Score 0++

Hello,

USB 3.0 devices might generate radio frequency interference that can cause Wi-Fi and other wireless devices operating in the 2.4GHz band to have issues communicating with your Raspberry Pi4. To avoid interference on the 2.4GHz band using Wi-Fi, try using the 5GHz band instead. If problem still exists, please turn off WiFi and use the wired network instead.

Can I power one more pi4B from the other xh2.54(without connecting to disk)?

Hello Geekworm,

I bought Order GEEKWORM-21-4685 consisting of Raspberry Pi 4 Model B+X829 Dual 2.5" SATA HDD/SSD Shield+Metal Case+X735 Power Management Board+DC 5V 4A Power Supply Kit × 1, Kit-2.

Shipment arrived fast and all parts fit nicely in the metal case.

I have however 2 questions: 1) I cannot get the RPI to boot from X829 when connected to USB3 port using the male/male USB cable provided in the set. If I use a USB2 port or add a cable extensor, then it will boot correctly. I'm using Ubuntu Server (or Desktop) 2.10. Is this a known issue? any eeprom settings I need to configure?

2) The X735 Power Management is not recognizing a system Shutdown (i.e. sudo shutdown) can keeps the case with power eventhough the system is not running anymore. Is this a known issue? any settings I need to configure?

Besides that, everything else seems to be working fine.

Looking forward to your reply.

Regarding the poweroff issue, it turns out the operating system has to send some signals to the X735 via the GPIO at the end of its shutdown sequence. Some SystemD service should do the trick.
