Overview

In December 2019, the X855 has been updated to X856.

The X855 V1.3 mSATA SSD Shield expansion board provides a complete storage solution for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, only mSATA interface SDD hard disk is suitable for X855 mSATA SSD extension board; Support up to 1TB mSATA solid-state drive (SSD); With this module, user can build a mobile hard disk with a mSATA SSD for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B.

The case for Raspberry Pi 4 with X855 hasn't released yet, but it will release in the near future.

Test Data

Test results based on SAMSUNG MSATA 860EVO 250G SSD. We used 3 different software to test it, since this is transferred via USB, it cannot read and write 500M/S.

So far terrible. Cannot get it to continuosly recognise the msata drive. Have modified the module to enable quirks but still nothing reliable. No idea how to progress right now. Probably will send it back to supplier.

Hello,

I now have 6 of these boards. They are connected to rPi4b/4G with the supplied jumper and have Samsung 860 EVO 1TB SSD's in them.

Two appear to work fine, but the other 4 keep logging :

at random intervals in syslog, accompanied by freezes of the system as I/O is blocked.

I've swapped the SSD's around between working and non working cards, but the problem stays with the non-woring one.

I'm trying to build a HPC cluster here, and this is really letting me down.

Orders 2019-1702, 2019-1891, 2019-2032.

The 2 cards from 2019-1702 appear to be working fine.

Where is the list of GPIO pins it uses? I think it has a conflict with the Fe-Pi audio card.

One more problem, even while using a USB 3 cable the drive has to be unplugged and plugged back in several times after reboot to be recognized by the Pi.

I have just received the x855 for the pi 4b and the card works fine with a usb cable but the USB 3.1 Gen 1 usb bridge does not work. is there a fix for this so I can put this unit into a case without having a USB cable hanging out?

1. I have no idea where and how they could get this result. I only could get 237/204 MB/s (USB 3 male-to-male cable) I have about 200MB/s for USB stick. 2. I could install the system on the drive, but the board kept blinking with LED during upgrade at 17% until I unplugged Pi 3. There is no return on product bought from China (I bought on newegg.com), there is only my comment so far on this product.

4. Yes, SupTronics X850 works without any problem, unfortunatyely you have to use cable.

Hi, which SSD do you use for testing ? if the same SSD used, I think you should get the same result.

we used the same circuit and same chipset for both X850 and X850 but adding a shild can to improve RF interference. FYI, if using X850 with Pi4, The 2.4GHz wifi is not stable and cannot connect automatically after booting.

Anyway, thanks for your valuable feedback. we will look into this and we might remove this shield can for next version.

I received 2x x855. Connect with usb3 cable does not light anything. Also no recognition of device in w10. Same cable runs other external ssd fine. Samsung T5.

Connecting power to small USB shows leds. But no device recognition neither.

Is it necessary to connect 5v on white plug?

In the meantime I got it working. You should write that u definitively need a USB 3 cable with 2x type A connectors to connect to a pc. Second the Pi4 does give power to USB 3 only after boot. U can read that new boot is initializing some chips(like the USB controller) I tried without sdhc card -> no boot up = no Usb3 supply = no lights on x855. So now we just have to wait for network boot and everything will be fine. By the way: Thx for your mailed support

Hi,

today received X855 and equipped it with EVO860 256 GB.

1st Try: I connect via USB2.0 cable to Ubuntu 18.04 PC.

The blue LED on X855 turns on I hear a strange noise from the device (like a bee, comes from the metal box) -> I think this should not be the case Device is listed in lsusb fdisk returns "no media found"

2nd Try: I connect an USB Power cable with the micro USB plug on the X855 and connect via USB2.0 to Ubuntu 18.04 PC

The blue LED on X855 turns *not* on The device is not shown in lsusb

3rd try: I connect X855 on Windows 10 PC with USB2.0 cable

device is not shown

Can you please advise, if something is wrong with the device? I assume, when I connect the adapter with an normal PC and USB cable, I would be able to write and read from the device as a normal USB storage.

The problems with the X855 remembers me to the desaster with the first versions of the X850. Up to hardware version 1.3 they used the JMS578. This controller is known to be a piece of junk. From hardware revision 3.0 they used ASM1153E. Everything was fine then.

At least you should test the connection to the host system with a USB3-cable (its blue colored). Make sure to plug into a USB3-port.

Finally, I got one in my hands. My impressions: I run it with a SAMSUNG 860 EVO mSATA 250GB. I did this already with a X850 (via blue cable). On X850 everything was fine. Got a score of 9354 with benchmark-tool from https://jame...-benchmarks/ After connection to the new X855 the device did not start. After replace of jumper with blue cable, the device started. Did an apt-update and apt-upgrade. Device run very very hot. In order to prevent damage, I disconnect power supply. Device did not start after repowering. Unplugged the X855, reconnected to X850. Everything was fine then.

Summarize: X855 may be buggy?
