Important Notes

  • Automatic Drive Power Cut-off: Supported with DC jack power input only. Not available when using ATX 4-pin connector.
  • Warning: Over-voltage will damage your HDD. Please use a stable 12V power supply within the specified range.
  • The X1017 is designed for data storage purposes and does not currently support booting from HDD/SSD with the existing firmware.
  • Do not apply power to your Raspberry Pi via the Type-C USB socket.
  • All SATA ports share the Pi 5's PCIe Gen3 x1 total bandwidth. No impact on HDDs; only affects multi-SSD full-load scenarios.
  • When using the ATX connector for power output, follow standard Molex current ratings (max 5A per 12V pin for long-term stability) to avoid connector overheating.

Overview

The X1017 is a PCIe 3.0 to 8-port SATA expansion board designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi 5, providing a one-stop solution for high-capacity, high-speed storage upgrades.

It addresses two major pain points in building multi-disk storage systems with the Raspberry Pi 5:

  • Insufficient native storage capacity:

Supports simultaneous connection of up to 8 SATA hard drives, with a maximum capacity of 22TB per drive and a total capacity of up to 176TB.

  • Confusing power supply for multiple hard drives:

Equipped with dual 12V power input options (two standard DC power jacks and one 4-pin ATX power connector), eliminating the need for separate power supplies for the Raspberry Pi. One single power supply powers both the Raspberry Pi 5 and all connected SATA drives — no separate Pi power supply needed. High-power setups (e.g. 8×3.5" HDDs) require dual DC adapters; see technical specs for details.

Supports simultaneous access to multiple hard drives and features 8 SATA 3.0 interface with bandwidth up to 5Gbps, ensuring fast and stable data transfer. Suitable for building home media centers, personal NAS, closed-circuit television video storage, and personal data backup servers.

Features

  • 8 x SATA 3.0 Ports : Connect up to eight SATA devices simultaneously to your Raspberry Pi 5
  • High-Capacity Storage : Supports up to 176TB total capacity (22TB per drive).
  • Wide Drive Compatibility : Works with SATA 6G, 3G, and 1.5G hard drives
  • Multi-Speed Support : Supports communication speeds of 5.0, 3.0, and 1.5 Gbit/s
  • Drive Status Indicators: Individual LEDs for each port (solid = connected, blinking = active)
  • Flexible Power Input : Accepts 12V power via DC jack or ATX 4-pin connector
  • Unified Power Delivery : High-efficiency DC/DC converter delivers up to 12A to power both Pi 5 and SATA drives from a single source
  • Pogo Pin Power to Pi 5 : Powers your Raspberry Pi 5 directly via pogo pins; no separate power supply needed
  • Automatic Drive Power Cut-off : Cuts power to SATA devices when Pi 5 shuts down (DC jack only; not supported with ATX 4-pin)
  • Splitter Cable Included : Comes with a power SATA splitter cable to support up to 8 drives
  • HAT-Friendly Design : Mounts on the bottom of the Pi 5, allowing you to use your favorite HATs alongside it
  • External Power Button Header : Easy DIY case integration
  • 12V PWM Fan Header: For custom case cooling solutions (⚠️ Only for 12V PWM fans; 5V fans will be damaged)
  • Tested and supported operating systems: Raspberry Pi OS (64-bit), OpenMediaVault (OMV)
  • Compatible Accessories: PA12V10A power adapter, X15-F10 8010 PWM-controlled fan

Note:The X1017 does not support SATA boot with the current Raspberry Pi5 firmware.

Technical Specification

Power input
  • 12Vdc ± 5%(Warning: Over-voltage will damage your HDDs!)
  • Intput Ripple & Noise: 200mVp-p Max
Recommended power supply via DC jack
  • 8 x SATA 2.5" HDD/SSD : 12V 10A adapter x1
  • 4 x SATA 3.5" HDD : 12V 10A adapter x1
  • 8 x SATA 3.5" HDD : 12V 10A adapter x2

(Note: 3.5" HDDs have high inrush current on startup. Ensure your power supply has sufficient peak current capacity.)

Recommended power supply via 4-pin ATX connector
  • 12V 20A

⚠️ CRITICAL WARNING: Never connect a DC power adapter AND an ATX power supply to the board simultaneously.

Two identical 12V DC adapters can be used in parallel via the two DC jacks for high-power configurations (e.g. 8×3.5" HDDs).

Raspberry Pi Power Supply 5.1V ±5%, maximum 12A (output via spring pin)
