The SSD was found once according to the following process, but after the SD card was re-burned due to other problems, the SSD could not be found again using the same process. My SSD is: KIOXIA G2 1TB 1. sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y 2. sudo rpi-eeprom-update 3. update bootloader to latest 4. sudo rpi-eeprom-update -a 5.
