SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS AND WARNINGS

  • You must read these safety instructions and warnings before charging your batteries.
  • Lithium Polymer and Li-ion batteries are volatile. Failure to read and follow the below instructions may result in fire, personal injury and damage to property if charged or used improperly.
  • Never make wrong polarity connection when charging and discharging battery packs. Always double check polarity of battery's connector to make sure "+" to "+" and "-" to "-".
  • Do not mix and use old batteries and new batteries, or batteries with different brand names.
  • Lithium batteries has it's cycle life, please replace old battery with new one when it reaches it's service life or when it is two year old, whichever comes first.
  • When charging Battery Pack, please put battery in a fire proof container. Please don't leave the X1202 on the wood material or carpet and unattended.

Power Supply Tips
  • The Wide 6-18V Input allows the user to choose the power supply flexibly. The required current is greater than or equal to 2A/3A.
  • The reserved 6-18V XH2.54 connector provide convenient power supply when integrate X1202 with other products.
  • The X1202's Type-C port simplifies power supply by supporting the 5V 5A Type-C power adapter used by the Raspberry Pi 5.
  • Please note that the DC 6V-18V wide voltage connector is just for the convenience of using the power supply you have on hand. If you have a Raspberry Pi 5 power supply, you don’t need to buy an additional power supply. Just use it to charge the X1202.

  • Do not apply power to your Raspberry Pi 5 via the Type-C USB socket.

FAQ

Q: Why does the message "This power supply is not capable of supplying 5A" appear??

X120X series UPS shield can provide enough 5A power supply capacity;

Please set as follows:

Open the Teminal window based on Raspberry Pi OS and execute the following command:

sudo rpi-eeprom-config -e

Add PSU_MAX_CURRENT=5000 at the end of the file that reads like this:

Press Ctrl-O, then enter, to write the change to the file.

Press Ctrl-X to exit nano (the editor).

Reboot your Raspberry Pi 5 to make the change take effect.

Note: If you are using other OS like Ubuntu, please flash Raspberry Pi OS first, and then re-flash other OS such as Ubuntu etc after completing the above settings.

Q: How to disable auto power on feature on X1200?

A: When you connect an external power supply, the UPS board will automatically power on the Pi 5 motherboard while it starts charging, this feature is called auto power on, considering that some customers need to disable this feature, so we have also disclosed the following solution to disable it: please use a soldering iron to remove the resistor indicated by the arrow in the illustration.

PS: We don't think you need to remove the resistor to disable 'AUTO ON' function. Since there is an onboard switch, if you don't want AUTO ON, just press the switch to completely cut off the power.

WARNING: Please consider the following risks before removing this resistor:

  • The removal operation may damage the MCU, so please be careful with the operation.
  • Once you remove this resistor by yourself, you will lose the warranty of this product. We no longer offer any warranty for this product.

Q: Why does the UPS shield continue to output power when PI 5 is turned off via press the on-board button?

A: The UPS shield provides enhanced power management features that intelligently monitor the power status of the Raspberry Pi 5 and automatically cut off power when the Pi is powered off. This helps optimize battery life by entering an ultra-low standby power consumption mode. It ensures efficient operation and maximizes the lifespan of the UPS battery.

To get the above features, check that the following settings are complete

Q: What battery is recommended for this ups shield

A: Please use high quality batteries from Samsung 35E 18650 lithium battery, Panasonic NCR18650B, Toshiba, etc. Do not use the battery with built-in protection circuit because it will limit the discharge current.

For the X1203 shield:

If using a lithium battery, the required voltage is 3.7V;

if using a battery pack, please make sure it is a parallel battery pack.

There are 2 XH2.54-2P battery connectors on board, it is recommended to use the same type of battery.

Q: Run sudo i2cdetect -y 1, can't find I2C address 0x36?

A:

1. Make sure you enable i2c interface, refer to How to enable I2C

2. The UPS connects to the Pi GPIO via pogo pins, If the I2C address (0x36) is not detected, Please clear the leads of pin 3 and pin 5 on the GPIO header from the bottom of the Raspberry Pi PCB and install again, and also check if the pogo pin of ups shield is in close contact with the pad position of PI 5(you can adjust the [pogo pin] position).

There won't be any other problems, it's this poor contact that's causing it.

Q. X1203 UPS voltage drops / low voltage warning appears?

A:

1.Powering the X1203 via Type C connector with / without the batteries,Pls check if you still have the issue.

2.Please clear the test pad on the Pi's PCB bottom which is used for connecting the X1203 for 5V power delivery.

I would like to use this with RPi4. I understand one of the pogo pins (near the RPi pins) needs to be connected to 3.3v to not shut down, to detect the RPi4.

But can you share which are the power pogo pins to connect to the RPi4 power pins?

Hello, I would like something that has 4 cells. Neither X728 nor 729 have 4 cells. And I don't want to buy the 8 cell extension, that's too much. So any information on how to make this compatible with RPi4 would be much appreciated.

By the way, does X1202 balance the cells when charging?

Hello, I have 4 batteries, each with a capacity of 2980mAh. The total capacity is therefore 4x2980mAh=11920mAh. With the Raspberry running my application I measured it draws 700mA. So 11920mAh / 700mA = approx 17 hours of running time. Can someone confirm this? Thanks in advance.

Hi!

Could I use the USB output to power up a USB hub? In the interface picture it says: 5V, current unlimited, but down in the user manual it says: USB2.0 type-A power output socket, which implies 5V 500mA, which would be not enough I guess.

The use case is that the RPI cuts the power on its usb 3.0 ports at shutdown too soon, causing an increase of the Unexpected Power Loss SMART counter. Using an active USB hub between the RPI and the USB SSD enclosure solves the problem, but at power loss the hub will be cut down as well, so it would be useless unless the UPS HAT powers it via USB power output. There is also a question whether the power of the USB hub has enough time after the RPI powered down. Somewhere I read that the HAT cuts power 3 seconds after the RPI shuts down, is it correct?

Actually I see it in the interface picture, point 6: 5VO power output LED: if the Pi 5 is not detected, will turn on for 3 second then off. Does it mean then that the output USB gives continuous power for 3 seconds after the RPI shuts down? Is the powering of the USB output seamless till switch off?

If I connect POE via x1012 to rpi5 with x1202, it seems like the adapter is not connected, but 4 green LEDs are on. Is it ok or something wrong?

Sorry for the misunderstanding, X1012 cannot be used with X1202 UPS. If use X1202 to power Pi5+ X1012, POE function cannot be used.

Hello everyone. I have two X1202 V1.1 with two different USB-C 5.1V/5.0A power supplies and one DC jack 12V/2A adapter. If I connect the X1202 without Raspberry Pi to the USB-C adapters, nothing happens. If I use the 12V adapter, everything works fine with any of the X1202.

Why can't the X1202 see the USB-C adapters?

Hello, I am using the x1202 model of UPS, and I have encountered a phenomenon. When the battery is low, I charge the UPS and shut down the Raspberry Pi. After the charging current drops to 0, I turn on the Raspberry Pi to check the battery level, but it shows only 1%. However, the battery voltage has already reached 4.2V. It seems that there is an error in the battery gauge.

Can the full charge voltage be adjusted via script or configuration code? It isn't good for LiIon batteries to sit fully charged for extended periods. Ideally they would charge to ~3.9-4V while retaining the option of charging to 4.2V

Can you set PSU_MAX_CURRENT=3000 instead of 5000 to draw less Amps from power supply while charging? Could you set it to 2000?

Yes, we know that it can be turned off with the external switch but since the Raspberry Pi is installed in an inconvenient position and is used as a dash in the car that connects to the ECU to display its data, we would like it to turn off on its own after a certain time that the power was turned off. Since X1202 communicates when there is no more power, on this event you could start a countdown, close open applications and turn off the system, without using a keyboard, mouse and external switch.

Can this power 5, 3.5" drives on the x1009, through the board? can the x1009 power through the second barrel for the HD power? or would i use an ATX for the drives and leave the boards powered through the ups?

Is it possible to turn off the 5V output on the XH2.54-2P ports or the USB-A connectors when the pi5 is shutdown? I want to use them to power an LCD display and speakers but they continue to draw power when the pi is shut off.

Is there a way to run the pi5 off of the 5v out XH connector? Due to size constraints I cannot use the pogo pins.

If I need to solder connectors from the GPIO to the Pogo pins, which ones are necessary for minimal function?

I noticed that the x1202 always said "AC Power OK" even with power plug disconnected. As the pld.py code ran I could press down on the Pi board and the x1202 would say "AC Power Loss". When I let up it would go back to "AC Power OK". Seems like a pogo is not making good contact. Any suggestions?

Hi,Please remove X1202 from Pi5, wipe the pogo pin with alcohol,then reinstall it. please adjust the position of the pigo pin appropriately so that it contacts the Pi5 well.

One of the pogos looks like it contacts the area for the Real-time battery. Does this also supply power for that port?

What happens, if I connect a USB C power supply that does not provide 5V 5A but for example 5V 3A.

Will the UPS use the batteries to make up for the missing power? Is it possible to charge the UPS with 5V 3A when the PI is turned off?

Hi,When the load is heavy and the USB-C power supply is insufficient, the UPS will draw power from the battery. But if the USB-C power supply does not have overcurrent protection, it may be damaged. It is recommended to use 5V 5A power supply.

Manual says "Note: the voltage range must be 3.00~4.10vdc." 18650's can go down to 2.5V per cell. Can the minimum be 2.5-2.7V or is 3.0V min a hardware limitation?
