Product Overview

The PD dongle is an adapter for 5V5A PD handshake with a Raspberry Pi 5. It prevents the Raspberry Pi 5 system from displaying a pop-up window, allows the USB port to accept up to 600mA current, supports reversible insertion of the USB-C port, and is compact (only 1*1cm), saving space. It features immersion gold plating and lead-free manufacturing.

Functional Principles and Problems Solved

If the power supply is provided to the Raspberry Pi 5 via a power pin or PoE, a PD handshake with the Raspberry Pi 5's USB-C power port cannot be achieved. Therefore, a pop-up window will appear after system startup, as shown in the red box in the image below.

Furthermore, the Raspberry Pi 5's USB port will be current-limited to 600mA. At this time, we can plug our PD dongle adapter into the Raspberry Pi 5's power USB-C port to achieve 5V5A PD handshake, and the Raspberry Pi 5 will support full-speed operation. At the same time, the Raspberry Pi 5's USB current limit will be relaxed from 600mA to 1.6A.

Note: If a lightning bolt icon appears in the status bar, it's a low voltage warning due to insufficient power supply voltage, not a PD handshake issue, and can be ignored. To remove the lightning bolt icon, you need to replace.

Applicable Scenarios

Designed for Raspberry Pi 5 powered without using the USB-C port, including:

  • PoE Ethernet power supply
  • 40Pin GPIO header / pogo pin power supply
  • Other 5V power solutions that bypass the USB-C port

Precautions

  • The PD dongle is only used for PD negotiation and handshake with the Raspberry Pi 5 and does not participate in power supply itself. The actual power supply capacity is determined by the pins or PoE module itself.
  • Occupies the USB-C power port; not compatible with setups that supply power through the USB-C port.

FAQ

Q1: Can I use this with a regular USB-C power adapter?

A: No. This dongle occupies the USB-C power port. It is only for use with PoE or GPIO-powered setups where power does not come through the USB-C connector.
